Attended Funerals

What is an Attended Funeral?

An attended funeral is a service where family, friends, and loved ones come together to pay their respects to the departed.

Unlike unattended funerals or direct cremation services, attended funerals allow for a more personal and communal experience, with mourners present, offering a time and space for those left behind to find comfort and support in one another.

It also allows for increased bespoke elements, which can look different for each family member. Be it a formal ceremony with flowers and choral music, or something more relaxed with additional services like specialist vehicles, they would have enjoyed. No matter what your loved one would have chosen, our professional team can make it happen with the utmost respect throughout.

Attended Funerals FAQs

Can I record or livestream an attended funeral for people who can’t be there?

An idea made popular during the COVID-19 lockdowns, livestreaming or recorded funerals are a simple way to ensure all friends and family who want to pay their respects can.

This process depends on multiple factors, but can be coordinated by the team at Brunel Funeral Directors if this is something you are looking for.

Factors include:

  • The policies of the crematorium or church
  • How it will be recorded – via a professional videographer or a personal device
  • Permissions from the officiant/celebrant
  • Any additional costs for audio-visual support

If you want to set up livestreaming or recording for an upcoming service, please contact us today.

Can unexpected circumstances affect an attended funeral?

At Brunel Funeral Directors, we understand that unforeseen circumstances can happen. Be it traffic, bad weather, or even late guests, we’ve experienced it all in our 20 years of assisting families say goodbye to their loved ones.

In such instances, we’ll handle all eventualities sensitively and with professionalism, to ensure the attended funeral can go ahead as expected, by:

  • Liaising and coordinating with the venue, celebrant, and transport providers to ensure timing can be adapted.
  • Welcoming and guiding late guests in discreetly to minimise disruption.
  • Planning alternate cortege routes – in advance or on the day – to ensure the procession continues uninterrupted.
  • Arranging contingency plans if extreme weather is forecast.

If you are concerned about potential delays or issues, especially for very large funerals or complex logistics, we recommend you get in touch so we can proactively prepare.

Who organises parking, traffic control, or the procession route?

When you choose Brunel Funeral Directors for your loved one, part of our role is to coordinate the parties that handle logistical details, including:

  • The transport provider – who takes care of the vehicles, the cortege route, and selects staff to drive the cars.
  • The venue – may have specific rules about parking that guests need to adhere to.
  • The local authority or council – which can close roads or routes if needed.
  • Guests – who might need information before they arrive to ensure it all runs smoothly.

If your funeral is especially large or will be in a very busy area, we’ll make sure these things are sorted urgently so you can take it from your mental load. You’ll have enough to think about on the day, so why not let us help take some of the burden from you?

Do you offer unattended funerals and direct cremation?

If an attended funeral service is not your loved one’s preference, you can opt for unattended funeral services that are more in line with their wishes.

An unattended cremation or unattended funeral involves a respectful cremation or burial that is more private and allows for a bespoke gathering or celebration of life, however your loved one preferred, at a later date.

Like a pure cremation, if your friend or family member would prefer a more dignified committal with no one in attendance, read more about our unattended funerals or unattended cremation options.
