    Frequently Asked Questions

What does a simple cremation service consist of?

Our Brunel Funeral Service includes everything you need for a simple yet dignified cremation – ranging from the conveying of the deceased into our funeral home to the preparation of the body, a coffin, and completion of the necessary paperwork.

On the day of the service, mourners will arrive at the crematorium and will be seated before the service begins.

During the cremation, there is typically a number of hymns sung or music played and eulogies read. In some cases, families may wish to include prayers or poems too.

At the end of the service, the coffin will be moved for mourners to pay their final respects before the body is cremated.

Though not included in the price of our Brunel Funeral, guests will then make their way to the wake where they can celebrate the life of their loved ones. Usually, there’s food, drink, music and photographs to encourage everyone to share their fond memories of the deceased.

How does the Brunel Cremation Service differ from a direct cremation?

One of the key differences between our Brunel Cremation Service and a direct cremation is that a simple ceremony will be held at one of the local crematoriums – either Canford, South Bristol or Westerleigh. This will usually take no more than 30 minutes, allowing mourners to bid farewell.

With a direct cremation, there are no attendees other than the funeral director and pallbearers. This type of cremation is perfect for those who would much rather be laid to rest with minimal fuss. Of course, their loved ones can pay their respects at a later day in a way they see fit.

Our Brunel Cremation is all-inclusive, which means the price includes the provision of a hearse, funeral director and bearers on the day.

Out of the two, our simple yet dignified Brunel Cremation Service is the most expensive – but allows you to give the deceased the send-off they truly deserve, with their loved ones around them.

How long does a cremation service take?

On average, a cremation service takes place between one and three weeks after the death. Depending on the time of year and whether a coroner is involved, it could take even longer still. For instance, if a loved one dies during the Christmas period, many families prefer to wait until the new year to arrange the funeral.

The cremation service doesn’t take too long, though. You’re usually allocated a 30 minute time slot. Once you’ve taken into account guests arriving, taking their seats and leaving the crematorium, this leaves you with approximately 20 minutes of speaking.

In most cases, the ashes can usually be collected one working day after the ceremony – either by the person who completed the application form or the funeral director if stated on the form.

If you’d like to know more about what our cremation services involve or you need help making the arrangements, feel free to get in touch with our funeral directors in Bristol.

Is the Brunel Funeral Service right for my loved one?

Deciding between a burial and cremation service is a personal choice and merely depends on the wishes of the deceased.

However, if your loved one didn’t have a funeral plan or never discussed their funeral arrangements before they passed away, you may need to make the decision based on what you think they would have wanted.

Cremations are typically the more flexible option of the two, allowing you to have a simple service at the crematorium or later on with the ashes. This particular funeral option is preferable if you need more time to make the arrangements or gather relatives that live a long distance.

Something else worth noting about cremation services, like our Brunel Funeral Service, is that you can choose what to do with the ashes. You can scatter them in your loved one’s favourite spot, bury them or display them in a small casket or urn.

Burials on the other hand, are deemed the more traditional choice – providing a permanent gravesite for friends and family to visit. One of the biggest downfalls of burials is they tend to be more expensive than cremations (especially direct cremations which offer a simple yet dignified way to bid farewell).
